How to know the amount of radiation emitted by your smartphone?
Many of us are concerned about the harmful effects of 5G radiation on our bodies. However, have you ever tried to find out how much radiation your smartphone emits? How much radiation is average for a smartphone to emit, and how much is harmful to your body?
Radiation Emitted by a Smartphone
The smartphone in your hand emits different kinds of electromagnetic(EM) radiation. All of these are in the radio frequency(RF) region. It can talk to mobile towers in 2G, 3G, and 4G networks, which typically operate in the 0.7 to 2.7 GigaHertz(GHz) frequency range. The upcoming 5G technology can use up to 80 GHz frequency. But these are not the only EM waves used by a smartphone. It can also communicate using well-known WiFi, Bluetooth and NFC. WiFi works in the 2.4 and 5 GHz frequency ranges, while Bluetooth technology works in the nearby 2.45 GHz range. NFC needs a much lower 13.56 MegaHertz(MHz) frequency. All these EM waves constitute the radiation emitted by a smartphone. The next question is how to quantify these radiations.
How much Radiation? Give me Numbers
Radiation emitted by a smartphone is quantified using the SAR value. SAR is a short form of Specific Absorption Rate. SAR value shows the rate of absorption of energy from RF frequency by the body. A higher SAR value means the body can absorb a high amount of energy from the RF radiation emitted by the source, in this case, a smartphone. Technically speaking, SAR value is the power absorbed by the body tissue per unit mass of the tissue. The unit of SAR value is Watt per kilogram(W/kg). Smartphones can emit anywhere between 0.4 to 1.6 W/kg.
How much SAR value is Safe?
Different countries have different limits on the SAR value for a smartphone. In USA, Canada and India, SAR value up to 1.6 W/kg is considered safe, while Europe sets the limit to 2.0 W/kg.
As you can imagine, every smartphone will have a different SAR value. Either the SAR value for your smartphone can be found in the smartphone itself, or you need to search for it on the internet.
